Oddly enuf, the seller lists his as 1854, but I see no date on it.

It's a brass 1854 model half-sovereign, used as playing money or gambling chips for games. It's worth only a few dollars.

Interesting, so it's not a coin that is used to make purchases, it more of a token?

It's more of a "play money" thing. Card game counters like this were sold by the bagful with packs of playing cards, back when playing card games for real money was illegal in Britain.

Do a forum search for "card game counter" and you'll find plenty of different designs, from faux guineas to imitation ZAR Kruger ponds.

Thanks Sap, I did that search and found it an interesting read, also found out a couple more that I have fall into the same catagory, so now I have to make a new section for card game coins.
