Another coin I received yesterday. I don't usually make offers to sellers on vcoins, but I got this one for my price!
Just like my other Syracuse coin, it has a great patina and details. I didn't notice the dolphins until I photographed it myself.

Syracuse,-Hieron-II-Ae18
Syracuse Sicily, Hieron II 275-215 BC, AE18, 5.74g
Obv: Head of Poseidon left Rev: Ornamental trident, dolphin to each side "IER-WNOS" below

An interesting historical footnote on Hieron II: his virtue is mentioned in Machiavelli's The Prince "For even while a private citizen his merit was so remarkable...he lacked nothing a king should have save his kingdom".

The "flip side" would be my Syracuse coin of Agathokles, who is censured in The Prince as "his barbarous cruelty and inhumanity with infinite wickednesses do not permit him to be celebrated among the most excellent men. "

Thanks...I've enjoyed collecting both Greek and Roman coins, but for different reasons.
I find I do a lot more research before buying a Greek coin, because there is more variety and the price seems to vary more for coins of similar condition. Unlike Romans, spending more $ doesn't always mean you get a "nicer coin"--but I guess there's a lot of subjectivity there. Part of my satisfaction is in finding a nice coin for a good price.

Another awesome Greek DV!

Besides vcoins, wild winds, ebay, acsearch, Etc. Do you have any favorite ancient sites for Greeks that you would like to share?

I'd like to add I got this one from Aegean Numismatics on vcoins.
This dealer was willing to negotiate on price, and shipping was almost as fast as JW.
