Here is one more Greek coin that arrived. It's a Cherronesos, Thrace hemidrachm. I got it for the well-centered lion. I bought this from a well-respected dealer, but one thing that I wonder about are the small lumps in the fields around the lion. Normally, I would wonder if this is evidence of casting, but I have seen this on a few other examples--so perhaps it's corrosion to the coin or die?

Thrace, Cherronesos hemidrachm, 400-350 BC
Rev: Bee, Size: 13 mm, Weight: 2.35g

The test cuts do appear to be really cut into the metal, and the small pits (arrow) also resemble porosity I've seen on crystallized silver coins--evidence of old age. Have you seen anything silmilar on Greek silver?

That's a great coin and even better photography! I'm very impressed with both (but then again I'm easily impressed ). Seriously, very nice.

Another beauty, congrats. Where this type ever struck in bronze?

Thanks JW! Getting a good pic on a little coin is a challenge, but my little camera does great macros.
I think that most Greek drachms and hemidrachms from this period were struck in silver. The metal on this coin looks a lot like my Gorgon drachm, except it has less porosity.
