Well I was able to of made it by to see what it was all about and let me say that the George Washington re-enactor Carl Closs was ten times more impressive than the coin itself. Was interesting though that there wasn't very many people at all there and the press which I thought would be there taking photos of the first person in public to touch the coin at each of one these showings wasn't there.

Seems looking at the coin not having the IN GOD WE TRUST on the edge does put it out of sight and out of mind. It is very ironic from what Carl was saying that Washington was actually a very religious person and to have this saying hidden on the edge most likely wouldn't have gone over very well with him.
Suppose those opposed to the words are alot more happy than anyone about the edging.

Supposingly the coin has a different type of finish so that these won't tarnish as bad as the Sac,though we will see.

I asked one of the guys there that put it together why he thought there wasn't a bigger turn-out and he said he didn't know and I replied if they had sold the autographed rolls or maybe even T-shirts autographed or something they may of had more people. It was lame, there was never a waiting line to hold the coin.

They used several different types of rinses on the Saca and some are so slabbed. These rinses, were suppose to preclude various problems they had, at the time, with the Saca coin. They have a 2006 Saca identified as having had a special rinse also. Please look at address below.

Berry ,

Interesting link to byers site.
I found a coin in a roll of sacs and one side was dark and the other side shiny. I will have to see if I can find it and take pix. What would of had a sac in a roll have one side darker than the other?

It doesn't surprise me to hear of such a low turnout. I don't think the dollar itself will be popular.
Rest in Peace

I think turnouts for coin events can be misleading sometimes.

When my wife and I went to the Colorado Statehood Quarter launch on the steps of the Capitol Building in Denver, we got there two hours early. We didn't need to. I certainly wouldn't say it wasn't a nice crowd, but in my opinion was much less than what you would think would show up for a historical occasion.

I think the Presidential dollar series will be popular, at least among the young as well as coin collectors.

I know that there are those of us who want it to succeed but realistically it never will until they quit printing the dollar bill. If they don't quit printing it then this dollar coin will go the way of the SBA and the sac. It will be a thing for collectors and only them just as the sac and jfk are now. It is doomed to failure as a circulating coin.

As the story goes, Washington donated his own silverware for the first US coins. So he obviously had an interest in our first coinage. At the time, many of the world's oppressive regimes referenced a diety in one way or another on their coins. The Founding Fathers specifically chose not to have any reference to "God" on our coins (that wasn't added to our coins until after they were all long passed).

However, one thing that was on ALL US coins from the beginning was the word "Liberty".

So if Washington is turning over in his grave right now, it would not be due to "In God We Trust" being placed on the edge (or maybe he would be turning over in his grave becase it is on there at all).

But here are two reasons why this coin might actually be considered an insult to Washington:

1. This is the first coin in US History NOT to have the word "Liberty" on it. What message is that sending ?

2. In George Washington's own written words he stated that he did not want to be depicted on the nation's coinage. He thought that would be too much like the Monarcy form of government that the Founding Fathers rejected. Above all, he wanted Liberty to be the main focus of the coinage.

So what to they do, take "Liberty" off and put George Washington on. DOH !
