I think I will be doing type : P Next on my list is an au55 or au58 Flying Eagle centone day I hope to buy a 1793.. it sounds like alot, but if you save up and dont buy those 5 300$ coins, then you can get one  and yeah, eye appeal is definitely important. I wish I had some numismatic friends irl to go with to coin shows : ( I normally just go with my dad |

thats always good,thats the best thing about this site is you meet a lot of people who enjoy the same thing.lots of flying eagles are weakly struck,but you can find some slabbed xf45 that are really au53 etc. or an au58 that are really ms61 etc.and not pay the premium that certain grade carries.But it can also go the other way as well,so be careful.

Amputating, You might also enjoy Capped Bust Halves if you really like the Seated Type coins. It is a more accomplish-able set than Seated halves with the only difficult key being the 1815 if you don't count varieties. Like the Seated halves you are going to find that most coins in the series have some sort of problem and the earier years before 1826 are harder to find and a bit more pricey. |

Joe,I will probably buy at least one bust half for my type set for sure.. they are cool coins, I just dont like the way they wear down.. do you know what I mean? and talking about varities of bust halves.. darn there are a lot. Do you own some bust halves? JP, I know exactly what you mean. What grade do you intend to buy your barber/seated quarters in? and do you typically buy slabbed or raw? and why did you say earlier 1839-1842 would be difficult? (low mintages?) I was interested in collecting the whole 2.5$ gold indian quarter eagle set in ms+, but it seems like no one is interested in that.. and not many of them are under au anyways since they didnt seem to circulate.. :/ What do you guys think about this coin? Yeah, I have some but most of mine are lower grades in the F-12 to XF-45 range. I just cannot afford them when they hit AU-50 or AU-53 when the prices start to skyrocket. One's with original surfaces command a significant premium over retail due to the scarcity of problem free examples. If you only want one example for your type set I would suggest going with at least a XF-45. Also IMO the rarity of the earlier years is not reflected adequately in the pricing structure and these could see some growth potential.

Yeah, busties skyrocket even starting at vf-20, and au is unaffordable

1839-1842 does have low mintages which make it hard,but also finding nice pleasing examples for a decent amount.I'm hoping to get a nice au58-ms61 on both the seated and Barber quarter.it doesn't really matter too much to me if its slabbed or raw,as long as the coin appeals to me and has a decent price.Except on ebay I prefer to buy slabbed on ebay.As far as the 1858 AU55 half dollar you posted its nice,but, if I was buying I would look for one with decent luster for the same price or cheaper IMO.they are around,just have to shop around for it. |
