to look at this ruble coin. I picked it up this weekend at my coin shop, from a grouping of other Russian coins. It looked good enough to me to risk purchasing it, but I am by far not an expert on Russian Numismatics. I look forward to reading your opinions. Thank you in advance.

The coin appears to be a 1727 Ruble of Peter II, first year of issue. The mint mark is not readable, due to an imperfection in the flan. I do not know if the imperfection is due to strike or pour.

With my limited experience I've seen a few forgeries and no genuine articles, so my first instinct is to look for is what's wrong with the coin.

The obverse wants to be KM# 182.1 - I'm comparing curls on his shoulders (which, by the way, don't come close enough to the first two letters in the legend).

The reverse, on the other hand, wants to be KM# 183 - looking at the style of [Cyrillic] P's in the cruciform monogram (and I don't like the fact that some of those P's have hollow corners).

My initial reaction is - counterfeit. Check the weight, it should be 28.44 grams.

ElleKitty - I'm afraid that I have come to the same conclusion as 'svslav'. I may be wrong but you coin appears to be a cross between the KM#182.1 and the KM#183.
Take a look at the NGC website and judge for yourself.

No worries, if I'd been sure I wouldn't be asking. My quandary now is; is this a modern or contemporary counterfeit?
