I haven't fully cleaned this one yet but it has some detail left despite the rough environmental wear it's seen. I'll be posting more over the next few days as I clean the "cement" from them, but this is the first one I attempted out of the lot of 10 I recently received. I learned from my previous mistakes that slow and easy does it with these ancient beauties, so that's exactly how I'm going to take it.

Not much left to go on. No legend or mintmark yet. Maybe when the cleaning is finished. Sorry

I think it might be Valens, victory advancing left. Without the legend and mint mark I have not RIC # for you.

It's difficult to explain the corrosion... but it seems to have partially peeled or worn away over time around the edges exposing the core of the metal. I'm not sure if I can draw any more detail out than what's already there. And stevex6 the memories of that reference

I don't usually go out on a limb like that, but when I do...it's only to help out a fellow collector. Don't feel like you need my permission or something

I'm new to cleaning, so take this for what it is worth (not much), but is the brown a coat of broken up patina on top of the raw broze? I think your done cleaning that one...or am I wrong?

I always get a few of these with my metal detector finds . If you take off what's left of the patina you will end up with a dull coin with no details. There is nothing that you can do now for this coin to help it, the patina will just flake off with more cleaning.

Agreed, I too believe I've done all I can for this one. At least I have an idea of what it may be now. Thanks for the help everyone, still waiting on the rest of the lot.

this is what can happen to coins like these... Before this coin had one of the nicest portraits I've seen for these coins and the reverse was a little flaky but it was a decent coin overall not look at it. too bad but I still have it as my only example for this type for now.
