Hi,

Please determine the grade and verify the authenticity of this coin.

I may decide to sell this coin so any opinions on what it's worth are also welcomed.

Thanks,
mdpmedia

Nice, honest age. I dont know enough of these to venture a grade, but here's what others are asking.

Nice coin!
According to Krause's Standard World Coin Catalog and my newbie judgement:
VF because the corners of some letters and numbers appear a bit blunted, but almost all detail appears to be visible.
If the corners of all letters and numbers are sharp (which is a little hard to tell from this photo) then this is by all means XF...especially since there is such nice detail in the crown, which is , I presume, a focal high point.

By the way, I have read here that some dealers will say "world coins are graded
more strictly" ...which is actually a ploy to cheapen any coin you sell to them...beware!
In reality, they are simply graded as objectively as possible, regardless if they are worth ten cents or ten thousand.

If you want a buyer to know it is considered authentic by experts in the industry, send it to a TPG that is reputable...
Unless you are TPG with an axe to grind? Or whether that guy had an arguement with his wife that day? Just sayin'...nobody's perfect! Still, a good TPG has a much narrower range of subjectivity (on average?) than most folks (with obvious exceptions as seen elsewhere on this forum...just see the 'you vs XYZ TPG'....
IF you want to sell it FAST send it to PCGS...they are very very conservative...ANACS is about average, the others, read around here...search "what TPG do you like?" or some such thing...best of luck!

By the way, one member here sent known fake 8 Reales to a prominent TPG and they deemed it authentic...and he contacted them and had an interesting conversation regarding this...the guy has hundreds and hundreds of fake 8 Reales and is writing a book about it...so read on, read on, and REALLY learn as much as you can...

Looks like I was waaaaay too conservative...looks like low AU.In front of the ear, is that wear, or just a dark spot? Very very little wear, if that is a dark spot.A couple bag marks here and there in non-focal areas, so it could be AU...

Looks quite OK to me. Those weak bars in the '50' are usual for this type on the 50 Cents, for this period. They were just too fine to allow them to be struck up nicely.

Good VF (in the British / European grading system), is the correct grade for this coin. Actually, it does not matter a jot how a coin is graded, if it has been photographed fairly.

Late Victorian 50 Cents of the Straits Settlements are quite valuable, this one being slightly better than average condition. If you are going to sell, don't let it go cheaply.

With the grade now known, spend some effort on the Web to investigate the current market value for this piece. I notice the 'H' mint mark.
I am not up to date with an accurate figure for a value for this coin, but I would guess low hundreds.

I had one of these many years ago, it wasn't anywhere near as good as this one, and so I was not happy with it. It was sold in a job lot with other coins.

Just sold one on ebay...an 1896....for $88.99...about 3 weeks ago. Mine was in a little better shape.

I'd weigh it...should be around 13.58 grams.

I weighed the coin at 13.59 grams.

A closeup up shot of the previously-darkened area in front of the ear is also attached.

This new photo is the end result after I cleaned this previously darkened area with a porcupine quill.

This might be "once cleaned before" coin. Like what sel mentioned is a GVF (English system) or VF (what NGC/PCGS might term it).

This is a better date coin as compared to 1896.

Current price in this region, where this coin was once used, is abt USD150 (if it is NOT cleaned and you sell directly to collectors).
