Don't really collect them but I do have a couple of checks written during the Civil War and a few bonds that I know nothing about.

Here's the CW period check. I'm not sure if it is a bond but I have a "pay to the bearer on demand" note from the Canal Bank of New Orleans. $100, un-issued but dated 18--. I also have another one "pay to the bearer in tuition" from the New Albany, Indiana Business College Bank. $10, issued and signed. I was told it was Civil War period also.

Jim, interesting to me that you posted a check from Cooperstown, NY. C'town is 12 road miles from my old Scout Camp, is in our three-county Scout Council (Otschodela = OTSego, SCHOharie, and DELAware), and dozens of Troops (and Packs and Posts) stay overnight at our camp to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame (think A League of Their Own. Of course, 1832 is a little before my time, so I don't know the check's author. I didn't even think about collecting checks as part of the hobby. I used to have a whole bunch of very old (mid- and late-1800s) canceled checks from the family farm, but pitched them years ago. Now you got me regretting it and wondering if any escaped my purges. Is there anything flat and made of paper you do not collect?

Story time: our family farm was established in the early 1820s in Mt. Upton, NY just across the river from Otsego County, NY. It stayed in the family until 1939 when my grandfather died and none of his sons wanted anything to do with the farm. On this farm there was a safe (do I hear EIEIO? ). My father grabbed it (all 200 pounds of it) and stored it in our shop above the garage. It was a big mystery since nobody had the combination. When I was 14 or so, I did a little safe-cracking and drilled a hole in the back of it and with a flashlight was able to rotate the dial until the tumblers fell into place. Inside the safe were farm and family records going back into the 1830s including many canceled checks, papers on the cows, a couple ledgers, all sorts of correspondence, receipts, more paperwork, but no coins nor paper money. While I still have the ledgers (there's some genealogical info in them) and some correspondence, most of the rest stayed in the safe since it held no interest for any of us. The safe stayed in the shop when my parents moved in the mid 1960s. On occasions such as this, I wonder what collector items were left behind.

It is all History, the things you have mentioned now you would have to find the right collector for such things . and as far as EIEIO goes not from me , I am a FArm Boy From North western PA. So the EIEIO would also work for me. LOL
Now as a Former FFA and 4-H person info on a Cow form back then could tell alot , Interesting Story Fred Thanks for SHaring
