2006 Henry Parkes $1
Is this an oil error coin, it looks part of the coin, not raised.
It looks silver on an angle and oil rainbow coloured straight on.

If it were oil on the die it would be incuse a rough hole or impression. Your coin looks toned? or something it has come into contact with has just changed the surface colour?

The coin in this link was struck through oil, the oil sat over the date on the die and it struck the coin causing an incuse rough patch on the coin. I know the oil was on the die as there were a few coins in the roll with the same defect.

It doesn't appear to be struck through oil.

I can't think what would cause this, is there any sign if it being raised above the rest of the surface of the coin, as in small puddles of say glue or resin?

The coin may have had some chemical applied to it that has affected the colour, not sure what chemical would do it.

the $1 is made of an alloy. I'm wondering if what AC has is an imperfect combination of the constituent metals ?

I was looking for a struck through oil error...I love struck through oil errors.

I guess I'll have to wait longer.

Not sure how this was stored but I have seen the surfaces of coins affected by PVC/Softeners when they are stored in 2x2's in PVC album pages. Typically this appears on the high points of the coin as the PVC/softener leaches through the mylar where it's pressing against the album page. I wonder if in this case something like this has happened and reacted the coin surface to produce the effect you're seeing.

O silly I am putting my coins in your folders to prevent them turning weird.
None of mine were stored in 2x2. They have been stored in a tissue in a box.

I seen one or two that went weird when stored in zip bags, they tarnished with spots on them and I put them back to circulation and looked for better ones.

This one just appeared different; I might soak the coin later on and see if it comes off with a cotton bud.

It would be awesome if it was a mixed planchet

The purple penny folders are not PVC. They are safe polypropylene and coins stored in them wont tone due to the folder or it's materials.
