the old man bought a small collection and this was in it. know what it is? it has raised letters inside a raised clock face. the clock numbers are roman numerals. the time reads 12:44 and the letters read free silver. I will have to resize the photo's in order to upload them so they will come soon.

Hello and welcome.

Well, it's not a coin. And, given the discolouration, it's probably not gold. But beyond that, I have no idea.

What's on the other side?

This reminds me of the Hard Time Tokens. I agree it is not gold, hard to tell by the pictures, it appears to be either brass or bronze.

What size is it and can you post pictures of the other side as that may help determine what you have...

the other side is blank. the old man says its a cast token. he believes it was made during the silver standard movement because of the free silver inscription. he also says the clock doesn't read 10:44 it reads 16 to 1 the ratio of silvers worth to gold that they were trying to establish 1n the 1890's. the token is gold that has been verified says the old man. if you look at the closeup you are looking at the bright spot where the residue flaked away and under the 700x scope the gold is obvious, nothing shines like gold and this little spot has stayed brilliant gold for 30 years which is how long the old man has had it before I noticed it one day and got curious. and if you look closely you can see the edge of the casting residue. also the clock hands are tipped in silver.it appears that I have sparked a renewed interest in the coin as the old man is viewing it under the hp scope again.he is very interested in this forum as he had no idea you could have so many experts view and leave their 2 bits in so short a time. in fact the hard time token response reminded him that you call this type of coin a token. he says with out a doubt freely speculate please because that's all he has done and he has had this mystery for 30 years now and believes this forum thingy could certainly figure this out with so many different minds in focus. I personally am going to look into the silver movement era.

When you mention 16 to 1 that is from the 1896 US election as William J Bryan use the ratio of 16 to 1 of silver to gold in his election platform. These are now called Bryan money and several different types of token, medals were made refering to that election in 1896..

I have a few of these 16 to 1 tokens and they are interesting. The following picture shows the back of one with the "16 to 1"

How interesting.
Googling 'sixteen to one' returns a wealth of information on the subject.

There is almost no chance that it is gold, I see dark green and red corrosion on the right side which would only be present on something with a copper composition(bronze or brass). You can recover a gold coin after a 200+ year slumber on the ocean floor and it will look better than that thing. I would agree that it is most likely from the Free Silver era, late 1800s.

the old man says that a friend told him the gold was molten and poured into a casting. the casting has a slight coating of paste or powder to keep the gold from sticking and is usually a copper powder base. the token has been verified that it is in fact gold. we still are not sure of its possible origin.

I think everyone would be curious as to how the token has been "verified" to be gold...

Found this with a quick google:

oops, link was removed... shouldn't have posted it, as it was a link to another board.

Interesting item anyway...
