I currently have a Bounty Hunter Pioneer 202. It is an older one that was a birthday present as a child. I have found a lot of stuff with it but at my current location I feel it is really holding me back.

I am searching an old theater that opened in the 1930's and closed in the 1970's. Behind the theater is a doctor's office and house that date back to the late 1800's. It is next to a river and the ground is pretty rich and soft. Most of the silver coins I have found were by pure chance, and were deeper than 10 inches (I detected an area I had dug some 4-6 inch deep clad).

I am currently looking at the Garrett Ace 250. Is there a better choice out there that I can get in my price range?

If I were you and you were serious about dedicating more time to dirtfishing, I'd save up about $500 and look around for a used Minelab Explorer or similar machine. These things just kill the deep silver. I own one and have dug close to two hundred. I'd have more confidence in a mid-level machine and they are worth saving for.

I was gonna say the same. Buying another beginning detector just doesn't make any sense.
Trust me, I'm having a serious debate about what to step up to in a 700-800 dollar machine and I already have 2 entry levels and a water machine, but not a minelab

You might want to go to the metal detecting superstore website and really confuse yourself.
Rest in Peace

I'm finding coins at 12" plus with my Ace 350.
Good enough for now.

I recently bought an Ace 250. I love it! The discrimination settings are awesome and it is light and very well made..

About $500-600, depends on condition. Beware, some say there's a long learning curve with Minelab. I was digging silver and indians from a ballfield within 5-10 minutes, first time user.

Having dug hundreds of old silvers and other old coins, I can say that you don't need a detector that will have you dig to China. I've dug 150+ y.o. coins at 4-5" in depth, and I've dug newer zincolns at 9-10" deep. Goes to show.

i am also looking to get a detector...

i have heard a lot about minelab explorers and garrett ace 250's.. I am also on a tight budget, but I have found enough silver roll searching that I think I might be able to afford a nice used minelab explorer.. I think if I can get one with a probe for $500 thats resonable right? and like you were saying fistfull, my concern would be depth for the silver...i havent used either, but watching youtube I deffinitly see more people using and finding things with minelab...

you think somone here would go for that? trade up some 90% Peace dollars for a minelab explorer?

This one on ebay seems to be pretty nice and has lots of accessories that come with it. It's up to 660 currently though.

Explorer SE or SE pro (11" coil) used will set you back $700-900, because they are newer Explorer models.
Explorer II model is an older unit but a lot of old-timers swear by it even with the slightly slower processor.
