Hi Everyone,

I've been enjoying the 40 days of large cents thread, but feel I may be a little behind on my knowledge of the large cent varieties of 1858 -- which is to say, I didn't know of any. I can readily see why Zonad's coins are so scarce, but what differentiates coingirl's cents from each other. Is there a particular variety (or set of varieties) that is especially rare? If so, are there any financial premiums for these varieties, or are they more of a niche that has yet to be recognized in wider collecting circles?

Thanks for any information you can provide

Here are the major varieties listed on http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins...nt-1858-1859 and they vary widely in price. An 1859 Brass AG3 lists at $3,800. My impression is that there are many many minor varieties as there was manual involvement in creating the punches and dies. No reproduction machines back then to produce everything consistently.

The 1858's are an outstanding group to study for varieties. Rob Turner has written 2 books on the group. The first is 1858 and the 2nd is 1859/8. He has painstakingly identified all the die marriages between different obverses and reverses. 5 of these 1858 varieties were featured in the large cent section of Charlton that we did a year back. In addition 3 different 9/8 were also identified there as well.

While collecting by die pair is admittedly a stretch for a lot of people, there are really interesting date and letter over-punches in the group. I believe there are about 60 different die pairings for the 1858's and about 20 different ones for the 9/8's. I do collect this group by die pair so I'm always looking closely at the various markers to pick up a new one. I'm about 65-70% complete of all known 1858 die pairs and 95% for the 9/8s.
