Those .500 fine silver dollars almost always tone up nice in the OGP. I pick them up whenever the price is right.

I've seen a collector place the coin on top of the actual red felt. Toning, sure, but I would call it damage. It was accelerated beyond natural means.

They sure are good looking coins. I have a few and mine are tonning also. I took a look under the red felt and found that the steal case is rusted beyond belief. I wounder if the rust is making all the tonning?

Thanks guys, I was kinda in shock with the toning. My dealer purchased a bulk lot of about 10-12, I bought up 3 of what he had. He also had some in the blue felt cases that didn't have any toning to them. Are these the same or are they the clad versions?

IIRC the blue felt cases were used for the nickel dollars.

Ah, I knew it Geezer. I think the dealer mistakenly bought those blue cases thinking they were silver pieces. I better let him know.

Pretty much all the 71 silver dollars I've seen look like that. Certainly mine (which I've had since issue and never did anything regarding toning) do.
This was the first year of using this packaging for silver coins, which they also used in 72 and 73. In 73 they put a piece of foam rubber between the coin and the top of the case, but they have similar toning.
By 75, they started encasing them in plastic.

I didn't know that Van Rob. They tone nicely in the red lined cases. But the coins in the blue lined cases didn't have any toning to them. I wonder if it had anything to do with the fact that they are nickel dollars instead of silver composition.

Kookoox10, it has everything to do with the fact that they are nickel instead of silver.
