Can anyone provide any potential insight to this coin I am looking to purchase? I am trying to better understand the implication of the VAM 3 designation. I understand that ths is Van Allen Mallis designation, but I note that PCGS does not recognize this variation for the 1882 CC Morgan. Any feedback?

Thank you.

As far as I know PCGS will recognize VAM 3 if one is sent in to them for grading and attribution (attribution costs extra). They won't grade or attribute coins if they are still in the GSA case (the black plastic case some Morgans where auctioned off by the government in back in the 70's/80's) that you may find some 1882 CCs in. If an 1882 is sent in to PCGS for grading, but not for VAM attribution, then they will not denote the particular VAM on the grading label no matter what VAM it is. And again, they do not grade or attribute Morgans in GSA plastic.

If an 1882 CC is sent in to NGC still encased in the GSA plastic, or not in GSA plastic, then they will grade the coin and attribute its VAM (if asked to do so by the customer, which costs extra $)on a sticker that they put around the original GSA case. ANACS is another company that will grade/attribute VAMS on Morgan dollars that are still in the GSA hoard plastic (or again, not in any GSA plastic).

I hope this doesn't' confuse you...

Keep in mind, this variety is assigned a series of 4 progressive die states, encompassing some major clashing and the progression of a crack at the top of the Phrygian cap. In earlier states, it is quite common and worth no premium. Only in the latest die states, with the cap crack well-established, does it become a coin of abnormal interest.
