Does the 1987 D penny have multiple styles for the mint mark? I'm seeing some with a larger D and some with a smaller angled D. I thought it was wear on a few but the ones in the picture makes me think otherwise. I'm new to collecting and am having trouble finding info about this kind of thing. Any info would be appreciated.

Since they were hand punched on, some will vary.

Only the location will change not the style of the MM. The MM may look a little different from die to die because of how deep the MM punch went into the die and at what angle.

Sure, the MM style can change, since they have had multiple styles to choose from. I see it on many different cents and nickels. There are many more that aren't documented than that are documented. The main reason is, most people don't care and don't bother to document it. Ask any roll searcher that looks at the MMs and I bet they will confirm it.

Thanks for the welcome. I looked at the D's and neither look like a RPM. I think wquinn must be correct for these, one looks like a MMS-011 and one sort of like a MMS-012. I did an overlay and they didn't seem to match. One D looks bigger and longer. That's pretty interesting, I didn't know they could vary. I'll try to get a better picture of these just make sure I'm seeing them right and its not the angle or depth of the punch. Thanks for the info, I would have replied earlier but I found some really weird penny, it looks like it was punched on a nickel planchet or something. It's a dryer penny, still cool to me.

I was going through my Lincoln cents last night and I came across two 1987-D pennies. The D mint marks were noticeably different. One is quite a bit larger than the other. The larger mint mark does not even look real. The other penny has a smaller more normal size and font. Was this an error? What are the values of these pennies? Thanks.

On average, normal 1987 pennies are still only worth 1 cent. It is over 99% zinc so it doesn't have copper value, there almost 10 billion minted pennies from this year (from both mints) and they are still used in circulation.

Seeking Knowledge is always good. The more we learn, the more we grow. Even if we learn something that we hoped we didn't.
