With the announcement today that the one cent piece will be discontinued by Fall and gradually withdrawn from circulation, do you think the special "silver penny" in the 2012 Fine Silver Proof Set was the RCM's way of saying "Goodbye!" to the coin or do you think it will continue to be a part of proof, specimen and uncirculated sets well into the future? Even if the Cent was to be withdrawn from circulation, I see no reason why they cannot still be included in collectors' mint sets and proof sets.
Americans in general, and American coin collectors in particular, seem to value what traditions they have established more than people from other countries.
I think I understand the problems that have gradually arisen with the continued issuing of Cent coins for circulation. Those problems are not relevent when it comes to producing coins for collectors.
I wonder when the U.S. Mint will issue a proof set with ALL of the coins in silver? A silver proof Cent?... Interesting! (not a new idea)
The Royal Australian Mint already issues an all silver proof set each year, as well as an all gold proof set.

Are the 50 cent coins withdrawn from circulation now? I was thinking that they weren't being produced but not being withdrawn.
It sounds like the penny will be taken out of circulation altogether. In that case, I don't see why they would continue to include it as part of the regular proof, specimen or uncirculated sets.

I hope so, I don't really carry a lot of change on me but I always liked the penny.

Quote: @ canuck1us, what would be the point in removing the penny from a future collector set and keeping the 50cents? There is a difference between a circulation set and a collector set don't forget The regular 2011 uncirculated set on the RCM website says in the description, "The Uncirculated Set continues a long tradition as the perfect way to collect Canada's circulation coins from year-to-year." Note: I added the emphasis on "circulation." That being the case, I don't see the cent being included anymore in this set, if the coin is being withdrawn from circulation. If I am correct, unlike the cent, the 50 cent coin is not being withdrawn, although no new ones are being produced for circulation. The 50 cent is therefore included in the regular annual uncirculated set as it represents a circulating coin. That is what I see as the difference in the exclusion of the cent versus the 50 cent.
