I found this nickel while roll searching. I would like some input on whether you think it is a Struck Through Error or a Faulty/Defective Planchet. It is a 1972 Nickel. Thank you for any and all opinions. I took quite a few different pics at different angles that best show the coin.

I'm thinking struck through error. I was comparing it to another large struck through error coin that I had found a while back while roll searching cents. Mike Diamond chimed in on this coin and let me know what it was.

Here is another cent that I found a while ago. I think I had posted it here before asking for opinions on it but I can not seem to find the post. It is a 2000 Cent.

I'm torn between defective planchet and PMSD.

I was thinking PMD at first. After closer inspection you can see that the lettering in the area in question has not been flattened or damaged in any way. I would think that if it was PMD the lettering would be destroyed or flattened.

Sorry for the low quality pics. Best I can get holding the camera by hand and I do not have my microscope or tripod handy at this late/early hour.

Looks like PMD to me. Tough to say with out the coin in hand. An attack of some chemical sort after the coin was struck.

PMD, the coin was struck very hard by an unknown object which also flattened the poor beaver on the other side. Further proving that it is PMD, the 2nd group of macro pics clearly show that the edge is out-of-round at the site of the dent.

I see what your talking about biokemist6. What had me undecided is the fact that the lettering...specifically the "RE" in REGINA is raised and not flattened out. I thought that if something had smashed the coin with enough pressure to cause the damage to the coin that the lettering would be flattened out or obliterated all together.

Thank you to everyone for the responses.

The lettering is flattened a bit but it is difficult to destroy all traces of the original design detail. Even a double-struck coin will still show details from the first strike, surviving a much stronger impact than the posted coin.

IMHO
I think it is a faulty planchet and not PMD.

@ cladhunter
My thoughts are PMD since the damage has defomed the rim , therefore not damaged while the coin was in the collar die ?
