This tiny thin piece weighs 0.3 grams, dated 1856, and has a good gold look to it, unlike those modern replicas I've seen on ebay. It does have a few marks, so it is not Unc.

I agree, it's a genuine 1/4 Dollar fractional. Not sure of the BG #.

Wow! That was a couple of quick responses. I obtained this in the early 80s from a reputable dealer, now retired. It's the only piece I have.

I know almost next to nothing about these, but I suspect that lots of fakes have been made of them. The face detail on Liberty looks unfamiliar, but I guess that it is most probably one of these 600 varieties.

If 600 varieties have been identified, obviously some 'in depth' research has been carried out and published.

Anyone care to give some information, regarding this work?

There are thousands of types of replicas that have been cracked from their cases and sold as genuine over the years. Hehe the counterfeit that started my interest was a gold token. :-)

That one looks genuine enough to me and the weight is right. You might want to send it in and get it graded.

Just remember when bidding on one on ebay if it has a "bear" (kind of looks like a badger on some coins) it is a common fake. Any California fractional token with any type of animal on the Reverse is this common type. This isn't the only fakes out there but if you do see this you know right off the bat to keep walking if you want a real one
