I found this 1915 gold plated commemorative ingot in a house I just bought. It reads 1848 1915 California native gold washed $30.55 1475/1000oz. the house is a civil war era home and the previous owners were collectors of all sorts of antiques. I found this on a shelf and was not sure what to make of it. at first I thought it could be real gold so I did the unthinkable and scrubbed it with steel wool. as I committed this sin a friend found the same ingot online and suggested its value around $1400 possibly up to $2000. steel wool in hand I instantly knew I may have just halved that number. I have sent e-mails to people trying to figure out how to get it appraised and sell it to a collector, but haven't had a lot of luck as of yet.

Gold Washed signifies that the surface is plated with a very very thin layer of gold. Maybe made for the Panama-Pacific Exposition of 1915 ( when the $50 Gold slugs were made). It is the style of the ingots that were issued in California before the USMint at San Francisco was established, dating from the 1849 Gold Rush.
