I recently bought a lot of coins the seller claimed was from Jerusalem. In this lot the seller sent me, I've come across a pretty neat find. What I do know is the coin is silver and heavily encrusted with dirt, but what I don't know is how to safely remove the encrusted dirt without damaging the coin. I have zero experience with ancient silver pieces, I'm aware that they are a whole different method compared to bronze or copper. I really don't want to take any chances until I'm better informed of how to clean it. Any suggestions?

My apologies for the delay, my scanner software had to be repaired anyways... I have carefully removed some of the top layer of crust with a soft bristle toothbrush, but I'm far from finished as you can see.

This one is going to take some time to get cleaned. I perfer olive oil, but you can also used distilled water. Let the coin soak for a month and see if some detail starts to show.

I would start with a 2-3 months of distilled water and light tooth brushing. If the DW does not work then try the olive oil for a 6 months to two years. I have few that have been soaking for +14 months:)

Also check out the past posts here on CCF concerning coin restoration (cleaning). These old coins are pretty tough, but "restoring" the coin past its patina to the raw metal generally frowned on.

Distilled water, olive oil and a tooth brushing are all fairly conservative methods and effective IMHO. There are more aggressive methods like electrolysis that should be avoided IMHO at all costs and only used if all other safer methods have not succeeded.

Good luck restoring your coin! It can be very rewarding.
