@ oih82w8:
I must be getting a little better at 'grading from the hip.' I very much agree with almost all of the responses. The most important point being that this coin is not an uncirculated coin and just shows another 'prostitution' of the grading standards by the over-inflated TPG - PCGS.

Whoa! Did another Type I SLQ go through at the same time yours did, and the labels got mixed up?

This is why I don't see these graders as professional anything...just another opinion just like all of ours. Coin Community should start it's own TPG. We'd rival the best of them ;-)

The person who has this coin listed has it listed for 300? It just says 300... so, I offered them their choice of 300 pennies, 300 nickels or 300 dimes. I probably shouldn't hold my breath on this one, right?

Wow. I tend to overgrade and was thinking AU55 FH. I'd have never guessed they'd have given it MS63. Wow. Are we sure that someone didn't bust it open and swap coins?

I once asked a question here about any certain book I should read on a topic. The reply: "Why buy a book when everything you need is right here?"

Is it me, or do TPGs seem to overgrade key date coins like this 1917 T1? I've been shopping for a 1909 VDB LWC and the slabbed coins all wicked seem over graded.

The 1917 Type I is one of the most common FH designated coins in the series, noted for it's strong strike, and they were horded in large numbers for supposedly being the first year of issue. I would not consider the Type I Philadelphia a key date. The 1916 was released in Dec 1916 and not widely known about. Nice coin!

I'm horrendous at grading SL's and at least I could guess that wasn't a MS coin...

TPG's, most specifically PCGS, definitely grade with more leniency when it comes to the keys, mainly the super rare stuff that's seldom seen (extremely high grade or low surviving numbers)

Quote: ArrowsAndRays: Is it me, or do TPGs seem to over grade key date coins like this 1917 T1? Yes, I seem to get that impression as well concerning the 'key dates.' However, PCGS in particular seems to be the most difficult TPG from which to get a designation (ie. FB, FH, etc.)
