We are enormously proud to present our Australian Olympic Team five-coin set. Officially approved by the Australian Olympic Committee, these dazzling tributes salute the athletes preparing to represent Australia at this year's Games.

‘Dragonmania' continues unabated, and the ten-coin set celebrates the dawn of the Year of the Dragon magnificently.

The final release in the Famous Battles in Australian History series commemorates the battle of Long Tan which took place during the Vietnam War.

This month also sees the release of two Australian Koala coins, and the Mini-Roo coin -- all featuring new 2012 designs.

These and other exciting products make April another great minting month!

I'm only a casual (and distant) observer of Australian numismatics, so please understand my questions below are real and not an attempt at being funny or sarcastic...I'm honestly curious.

1) How many new releases does the Perth Mint issue in a year? It seems they offer multiple coins fairly frequently -- it must be difficult to keep up!

2) It appears the Perth Mint releases more coins than the Royal Australian Mint. Is this correct?

3) Are Perth Mint coins considered on par with the Royal Australian Mint releases or are they considered "second tier"? (I'm not referring to the quality of the coins, but to their "official-ness" among collectors in Australia.)

Thanks!

They have a release schedule and portfolio of products to match every pocket size - their preference is for deep pockets.

As a company seeking to maximise sales and revenue, without the burden of needing to produce coins for circulation along the way, they have a lot more freedom to produce and market value added products.

The Perth Mint at one time produced legal tender coins for circulation, continuing to mint 2 cent pieces up until 1983. Since that time many of their products do carry a nominal Australian legal tender status, but they are arguably fantasy coins designed to appeal to a collector market to maximise the company's sales revenue and profits.

The companys strength is as an international bullion producer, and for those who prefer to buy their bullion with a pretty picture on it at a fractional price above spot, then the Perth Mint offers the only realistic option http://www.perthmint.com.au/metalPrices.aspx

The RAM currently is the only mint producing coins for circulation and derivative products based on those designs. Like the Perth Mint, they also produce a range of collector market oriented issues that are issued for revenue generation.

The majority of collector bullion from both companies is priced at a substantial premium to spot.

I really like the rhino. Little expensive but I might get one if funds allow.
