I went into my local coin dealer to complete a sort of type set that I'm working on, and bought these 1933 S and 1963 Halves. I have had a lot of luck roll searching nickels and pennies (an 1887 IHC and a 1912 V nickel), and since I don't really search halves I decided it was time for a silver investment! I paid $18 each, which I think may be high on the 33 but maybe not on the franklin? He was asking 20 for a similar Franklin without the toning, so I went with this one. How did I do? Any opinion on grade would help!

I think you kinda overpaid for the franklin, seems like that wouldnt be too hard to find at melt. But maybe I'm wrong.

VG8 on the walker and AU on the Franklin would be my grades. I think you got some nice silver pieces for a fair price, enjoy them.

Fair prices...a tinge high...but not abusively so. Just think of the overage in price as an investment in saved time. You could roll search for hours and never find any, so $6 over melt is a small price to pay for each coin. Even if you found both coins in your first couple boxes you would have at least a couple hours invested...$6 an hour is below minimum wage! What do YOU value your time at? I say...well done and nice coins!

Well, one of my jobs values my time at $8/hr, (I guess I'm much more important to the other!), thanks unholy roller. And yeah, I'm also having more fun now than I would if I were melting coins...

You will learn and get better at knowing what to pay later on, just enjoy right now

Sometimes overpaying a bit is fine. The important part is to enjoy coins as a hobby, unless you're trying to become a dealer I say don't worry too much about the price. Unless of course we're talking about coins near four digits.

I would have paid that for that franklin. I like that kind of toning, so it'd be worth it to me too.

The price seems a tad high but not exorbitantly so. What matters is that you are enjoying your coins.

yea would be great to rescue every silver coin we can before they get melted, so if youre happy with your purchases thats all that matters plus the 33S is a nice one

As most have said, decent prices for both. Especially since it was from a coin shop. Assuming you ment from a local dealer, a coin shop.

Any silver is good silver in my book, but I think you did overpay...

Yes, hah, a coin shop. It's tough to get an awesome deal, but the relationship with a reliable coin veteran is worth something as well. Not to mention, my change was given to me as an 88 half and 41D nickel. Thanks everyone!

I've been somewhat fortunate to have stumbled upon a dealer who is only open three afternoons a week. I go in there to buy and ask questions. Sometimes I show him some of the finds that I've made and ask him for some help on grading the coins that I've found.
The best piece of advice that I got from him was to join a coin club. I'm going to my first meeting Tuesday evening. This particular club just happens to sponsor a somewhat major coin show that is coming to my area this summer. I went to the show last year and didn't know that it was sponsored by a club. I plan on attending this show again (this time with more knowledge, a buying list, and hopefully a little bit more money.
Joshkellog you may want to consideer doing something like joining a coin club in your area.
