I have an 1812 bust half, graded by Anacs in F12.
It has elongated star points going towards the rim.
I was told that this was not an error but the result of
uneven pressure from the hand press used in those days.
A second opinion would be appreciated so I can stop thinking
that it might be an error.

It seems pretty common.

To CCF! We will be able to tell you much more if you could post pics of the obverse and reverse. You are correct that it is not an error

It is common to see them with elongated star points. I have thought that those were the result of die wear.

It is a form of die wear, primarily caused by Bust Halves being struck on an open collar press. Without a collar, the planchet can expand further than it would if contained by a collar thus causing greater die wear. Bust Halves were not struck in collar full-time until 1837(a mere 1,200 were struck in 1836) with the advent of new steam presses.
