I'm lucky to have a pawn shop run by a really nice guy who is a former cop around here. He lets me pick through his "junk" silver which sometimes contains higher grade coins with a little more numismatic value than just silver. The guy just isn't a good grader and doesn't know any better. Best way to cut a little off the price you pay is to bundle a few things together and just try and make a reasonable offer. More times than not he is happy to let it go because he picks it up for cheap. Not all pawn shops are run as well as this one, I don't even bother stopping at the other two in my town anymore.

Most of the pawnshops I've been to have coins on display in their window or in their case and when asked they say that they're not for sale. REALLY? You draw me in and you don't even want to sell anything? That's shady. It makes me wonder how the heck they make their overhead.

Not sure if it's the same by you but around me we too have many pawn shops and other buisnesses that are not really buisnesses. One by me allows you to come in and then says nothing is for sales here. There is a restaurant by me that never has cutomers. Parking lot has cars in it but if you look in the window, no one is there. Place is closed all year long, lights on inside and outside and it has been there for as long as I can remember. By me there are other buisnesses that are always there, no customers, doors closed and locked, all lights on.
GEE I wonder what is going on?

I have a few pawn shops around my area. Some of them have coins and some don't. The material is usually limited to the modern issues. The prices on most of the stuff are a bit on the higher side though sometimes you can find a few things that are underpriced.

I have had great luck at the local pawn shop, silver dollars for 12 bucks and an O Canada set from 97 that has the special loon in it for 20.00. I made the mistake of informing him of the deals I got so he may be more studios the next time.
