Poll Question
Hi all,

My question today is do you think it's worthwhile getting one of the 2012 $10 Gold Proof - Wheat Sheaf coins?

rbarat...you're in my disposition too.

It is so limited as far as mintage (ballot based & only 2,500 will be released), but to me so expensive (when you could buy a Half Sov. for a lot less).

1/10th Oz 99.99% Gold

Only thing lower than the mintage is the number of collectors. In a couple years, it'll trade for bullion price, which I doubt will be $3600 an oz.

I think these ballot coins have lost their appeal with collectors
Wait a few months and you'll get on ebay for cost or less (though a part of me hopes this isn't the case)
So unless you really need it to compelte set or something I'd say let it go

You can probably guess what I voted for

I've gone into the ballot, but I'm thinking of putting it right onto ebay if I'm successful for all the people who may have not got the opportunity or aren't mint customers to get one when I see the prices other might put on them. So I dare say its awesome if you can get one.
Saw very similar with the Opal Koala recently, where people were selling them for up to $70 (or more) over release purely because you couldn't buy them direct from the mint or dealers. They've lost their shine rather quickly as some of the non buy it now ones are going for around $170 (still a good $40 over release price thou)

Last years Rams head coin was only $270 and they were sold recently on ebay for less than cost price.

Bullion value for these coins are only $164 so that makes it over 100% mark up. It doesn't seem like a very good investment to me.

With a higher mintage of 2500 in comparison to the 1500 for the annual roo, and being overpriced by $100 over what it should be, I would not consider this investment grade unless you're buying for substantially sub-release off ebay. In saying that, this is definitely more collectible than the poor selling Lunar Series coins.

My paper ballot is more collectible than the coin itself, especially here in the U.S.

Make no mistake, I'd buy this coin if I saw it on ebay, going fairly close to spot. It would go nicely with my Silver Proof and Uncirculated 2012 $1 issues, not to mention my pre-decimal ThreePences

Maybe...maybe not!
Hindsight is a wonderful tool.

Drifting a little away from coins (but the moral of the story is still the same); in 1975 I sold my EH Holden for $250, completely original except for camping conversion (fold down front seat back and you could sleep in it) and push button radio. Some years later I sold my Datsun 180B SSS rally special (genuine homologation model, Japanese made) for not much more. Both those would now be worth $10,000, or more, if properly stored.
As I said "hindsight is a wonderful tool".

Important thing is gold price sometimes goes down (not for long) but, long term trend, is up.

Jeff, a very true point, here's a graph I just loaded from a very cool very interactive website...I set it in AUD. Only issue it's a gold only website.

A full size 25mm (1 inch)same as the dollar coins would make it appealing to buy I think but not in the 5c size
