Is there a list somewhere, preferably in Xcel format, of all of the countries that you can collect coins from? I found a list at worldcoincollection.com, but I'd have to type it all out. Along with my impending fish collection, and another one I'm contemplating, I think I'd like to add to the foreign coins I already have and get a couple from every country. Nothing fancy, just a representative coin from each. Am I too ambitious? Do I need medication? Help! I'm caught up in this and can't get out!

Easier said than done. I'm semi-retired and have nothing but time. I've been spinning my wheels for the last 6 months trying to find *something* that interests me. Now that I have, it's full speed ahead! Hey, I have 36 years of non-coin collecting to catch up on!

I'm not sure if someone has a list of all world coins. That would be quite an undertaking. I can give you a website that a person has made and it is an invaluable resource. I hope he can keep the site going because without it I would have to resort to buying a Krause catalog and they aren't cheap.

Yes! That was the site I saw, not worldcoincollection.com. What I want is an Xcel listing of that drop down menu he has. If you promise me he's nice, I'll try emailing him and maybe he has it in that form.

Maryhm, A "one from every country" collection is great idea and good fun to collect. Foreign coins can be so very cheap to buy yet come from exotic places and have such a rich history. There are existing coins from countries and coins from those that no longer exist as well as coins from countries that have changed their name. For Example: Czechoslovakia, Chech Slovak Federal Republic, Czech Republic

...and djluster's list is only Europe, and only (for the most part) "current" countries in Europe. For instance, prior to the formation of what we now call "Germany" in the 1870's, there were dozens, even hundreds, of tiny little independent countries there - many of which issued their own coinage. Much the same can also be said for most of Europe, if you go back far enough. India likewise. Places like Spain, Argentina, Mexico, Switzerland and China have extensive "provincial" series - feel free to count each state or province a separate coin-issuing "country" if you like. Keep going further back in time and the list of possible "countries" grows exponentially, although "country" starts to take on a much fuzzier meaning. If you go right back to ancients, there were thousands of city-states in the Greek and Roman world which issued coinage. Back then, issuing your own coinage was a "status symbol" - a city that made its own coins could consider itself important. Indeed, some cities have been lost completely, gone without trace except for a handful of coins that prove the city once existed somewhere. I'm primarily an OFEC (One From Every Country) collector, and I like to keep "country" as loosely defined as possible, just to keep things interesting. My current database has 599 coin-issuing entities listed; if you think it might be useful, send me an e-mail and I'll send it to you as a .txt file attachment, which can load straight into Excel. That number includes ancients, mediaevals and most provincials. I base my list of current world countries on the Britannica Book of the Year my dad buys each year. You can always use an online reference; I found this one on Wikipedia. Or you can watch the opening ceremony of the Olympics next year, and try to collect one coin from each country that marches out... Of course, not all countries issue coins, though most do. The ancient "you're not a real country unless you make coins" attitude is still with us today. Some only issue "made for collector" coinage and use something else as everyday circulating currency (like paper money only, a "regional currency" in economic alliance with it's neighbours, or US money).

WOW! 599, I could use that list and I suspect other may also. Perhaps you should post it in the forum for all to see.
I've tried to compile a list from the Krause book but get caught up with the different monetary reforms and changes in styles of government and never get through the book to produce the list. Some countries are very hard to find.

I didn't want to flood the forum uninvited, particularly this thread. 600 lines is a lot of scrolling. Still, if you think it would be useful, I could ask Forum Mom & Dad if they'd mind something like that.

Don at (131231) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed sent me his list. I have emailed him back requesting his permission to post it. Someone else emailed me and offered their list. So maybe between Don, Sap, and others we can compile a pretty comprehensive list. Sap, if you could email me your list, I'll compare it to Don's and see what we have. Like I said, all I have is time. :)

If there's no problem with it; why not sharing the spreadsheet?

I've just finished polishing my list for posting here. Got rid of a few duplicated entries and polished it up a little bit - it's now down to 591 "countries". I've also denoted which are ancient or predominately mediaeval, in case you want to cross those off. There are also a few "banknotes-only" countries in this list.
So here's my list of countries I have in my collection. Hope your scrolling finger is ready:
