Hello all,

I would like to ask for some help in identifying a small silver coin that I believe is an Ottoman empire coin.

Here are photographs of the two sides of the small coin:

Small-Silver-Coin,-Perhaps-Ottoman-Akce-Ottoman-Akce Small-Silver-Coin,-Perhaps-Ottoman-Akce-Ottoman-Akce

(I apologize if I have it completely upside down; I've no idea which way is up.)

The coin is quite thin and small, weighing 0.24 grams and is approximately 10.7 mm in diameter. As you can see, almost half of each side is worn smooth.

If I google for images associated with the words "ottoman" and "akce", I find a lot of photographs that are quite similar to my coin. So perhaps my coin is an Ottoman akce, but I haven't found an exact match.

Would anyone on the forum be able to identify what province or state this coin may have come from? Any ideas on date?

The only reference I have is the two volumes called "Osmanli Imparatorlugu Madeni Paralari: Ottoman Empire Coins" by K. Uslu, M Beyazit, and T. Kara. I've looked through both volumes and haven't been able to find my coin. Perhaps it was struck before the year 1687, which is the earliest year these volumes cover.

Much thanks for any help!

Regards,
Earl

Hi,

and to CCF

Your coin indeed appears to be Ottoman akce. (small silver coin) I have many of these in my collection but I haven't been able to ID them. They are very hard to ID especially when they are this much worn. If you didnt find it in that catalog that can mean this coin is before 1687. They started minting them in 14 century.

Hello mvojnovic,

Thanks for confirming that the coin is an Ottoman akce. Yes, it's too bad that it is so worn, but it was part of an uncleaned lot that I bought through ebay.

Do you (or anyone else) know of any other reference books that might have images of older Ottoman coins? I still have hopes of being able to take the portion of my coin that has identifiable characters and match it with a known coin.

Thanks!

Regards,
Earl

No I dont. Although I know that there are specialized catalogs just for Ottoman coins.
Maybe some of our members from Turkey can help you.
