I'm stumped as to which variety of 1859 One Cent this is. The 9 doesn't quite match any of the pictures in my Charlton catalog. Can anyone identify it? Sorry about the picture quality. The image is from an auction photo gallery.
Thanks,
peter

Thanks for your help. I will go check it out.
Edit:
I checked out all the 1859 cents on the site and still don't see the same 9 on any of the coins.

Peter, there are aparently over 200 different 9s...
IMHO it is just a simple narrow 9.
check out Dr. Haxby site for more info, or ask Zonad to chime in, his site here:

or check his site.
Bosox will also be able to help you. see here

Thanks for the info coingirl. After looking at Bosox' site I agree that it's just the plain narrow 9. Funny because the narrow 9 in my Charlton catalogue (2005 edition) has a 9 that looks a little narrower. But, like you said, with over 200 different 9s there's bound to be quite a variety even in those.

I tried hard to ID with your photos and cannot quite make it out. Try Jim Haxby's site vickycents.com and you may have success with coin in hand. cheers.

Thanks for the link nybird and for helping me ID this coin. It's definitely hard to do when it comes to this particular year.

When is a narrow 9 not a narrow 9 ? Don't really know. Here are several narrow 9's that all look different but would all be called narrow 9. Note that the centre oval goes from large to very narrow, and the tail balls are different.

Thanks Terry. Those pictures are really informative. After going back and forth from your pics to mine it looks to me like mine most closely resemble the "fat back" 9. Even then, where the bottom of the oval meets the stem of the 9 there is a slight difference in that the fat back in your picture curves up slightly where it meets the stem and mine is level where it meets.
Edit:
Actually after looking some more it almost seems as if mine is a cross between "fat back" and "fat all over" varieties.
