I bought a coin on the 8th that arrived today. I took the coin out and something seemed off. The coin is lighter than I think it should be, and the texture is odd. It almost makes me think of some kind of plastic...

It weighs 2.43g and measures in at 22.5mm.

Here is the link to the auction:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/18085538407....m1439.l2649

As you can see, the coin I received is also not the coin that was pictured (and I was told in the description that this would not be the case). The coin I got is actually in better condition than the one I thought I was getting, but this makes me hesitate. I checked FORVM's fake reports and could not find any matches. So, do you guys think it is real and that there was a mistake on the sellers end, or am I being played?

From your picture the coin looks legit, but the weight is odd. And Antoninianus of Gordian III should weight about 3.3 grams, 2.4 grams is way off IMO. I would contact the sell and ask why you didn't get the same coin pictured in the auction? I would also explain the the coin you received is way under weight and see if he will exchange it.

Doing a search on Vcoins, I notice these coins vary a lot--weighing as much as 5 grams, a few as little as 1.5gr.

The size seems OK but the weight seems light.
Compare here on vcoins , most are 3.5 to 5 grams.

Hi ancientcoinguy

I went back through Bengal's previous listings and I noticed that he had sold 2 other Gordianus antontinianii with the Oriens reverse -- 1 sold on Mar 6 and the other on Mar 23. Both times he used the same photo of the same coin, although not the same photo he used with yours. It appears our boy isn't above recycling stock (even if they're his own) photos. For what it's worth, your coin looks genuine to me. I have a few Gordianus coins myself, but I'll have to check their weights though.

Well, I contacted him about it and he said that he had sold several others like it within the past month. He told me that he sent the coin I won to the guy who should have gotten the one I received. An accidental switch, if you will. He apologized and said I could return it for a refund and that he would send me the one I should have gotten if the other guy returns his, too. I am unsure if I want to do that because I like this coin and there is a possibility that the other guy does not return my coin.

The question now is if I should return it in the chance I get my original, or keep it. Like oxos said, it was a terrific deal and the coin I got is actually better than the one I thought I was getting. Opinions on what I should do?

Well if you had won the better coin but gotten the less attractive one, wouldn't you want the othe guy to return the coin you rightfully won? I say return it and hope that the other guy does the same; it will sit better on your conscience. Just my input on the matter.

I'm far too honest for my own good sometimes, but, IMHO, my vote is the same as ValiantKnight. Return the coin in the hopes you get the one you actually purchased, with the understanding that you would like the coin if the other is not returned as well.

For what it's worth I'll third those thoughts of ValianKnight and JW. What goes around comes around and you might be the 'other' guy next time. You'll feel good about yourself too :) Just my opinion.

I gotta agree -- send it back. And who knows? The other buyer may like the one he did receive and you could get this one back again.
