Just found this one.

1996-P-Dime---Catastrophic-Split-Die

The reverse only shows a weak clash, so I don't know if that contributed to the obverse die breaking up. I think the loss of central detail is at least partly due to die subsidence, because a 1996 dime should not be missing near that much detail from just circulation. It also seems somewhat raised up as if there was a void the metal was escaping into.

A couple of coins from this die have sold on heritage. This one appears to be a slightly later die state than my and shows the central die subsidence more clearly.

Outstanding find Captain ... and nice photos that show all the details.

I note as well the separation of the obverse die where that crack passes through the IGWT legend ... observe in particular the vertical shifting of the legend GOD through the initial letter G.

Agreed that the loss of detail on Roosevelt portrait is likely due to the physics of metal flow through the broken obverse die ... there is only 2.27 grams of metal in the coin ... and it took a bit of that to fill the voids in the broken die.

An excellent example of an unusual and fun die break.

Thanks for sharing the photos.

It's not as handsome as the other one I found, but I'll take it.

Those are really some cool rough Gems.
I like both of them.

Nice finds indeed Captain.

I wonder how many of the split plating coins got through inspections before Mint employees took notice.

I think the die must be pretty close to complete failure, maybe it's a few dozen strikes away from flying apart. Given the rate at which coins are struck, it might last a few more seconds. By the time a mint worker picks up one of the coins from the bin and looks at it, it's already gone.

I've seen 5 or 6 of these total, so there's probably more. Many of these were from forums where people also found them in circulation. Great error; it's one of my favorite types.

It stands a good chance of being a split die. However, since the two arms of the presumptive split do not meet visibly in the center of the coin, it is impossible to eliminate the possiblity of two radial, antipodal die cracks. You'll note that the arm on the lower left appears to pinch out as it enters the swollen area on the side of Roosevelt's face. That swollen area represents an area where the die face sank in (die subsidence error).

This is the problem with many presumed split die errors. The arms don't connect in the center. Now the connection may be hidden, or it might be a true gap.

A couple examples of the first one (the possible split with die subsidence) sold on Heritage for $115, but those were MS64-65. There's an AU58 from the same die on ebay buy-it-now for $150 in AU58. Mine is lower grade than any of those, however.

The second one is a lot nicer, IMO; the error is more impressive in hand and the condition is a lot better. There were several 2007-P shattered dies (eight IIRC); a different one sold on Heritage for $322 in MS65 (I'd call mine AU58).

Although Mike indicated that because of the die subsidence, it would be impossible to confirm that it is a split die, I am wondering whether the abnormal offset in the G of God would indicated that the die has actually split since I would find it hard for the G to look that way with just a normal die break. Just wondering.
