I have a customer who showed me a medal. I found one similar, listed as

Quote:
1837-1887 Queen Victoria 50th Jubilee Canada Medal - Extra Large

http://www.ebay.com/itm/270942689456

It's 45 mm, and copper, compared to this white metal listing. It has obvious wear on the high spots, light copper pitting and a couple little areas of I think bronze rot. Otherwise, it's a nice even dark brown.

Any further information, like they only made three in copper/bronze, would be appreciated.

I just want to comment on how pretty this medal is!! Please wait for others who are more knowledgeable. All I know is what is pleasing to my eyes. And I really like this piece.

there were medallions struck all over the Empire to mark Victoria's 50th & 60th anniversaries.
If you wanted to get "the whole set" just for Australia, you'd be looking at more than 200 - almost every municipality issued them. The bronze ones were given to schoolchildren as a comemorative gift.

I found all sorts of stuff made by P W Ellis + Co, but only a few medals, and no bronze ones. At 45mm, it's impressive (1.77")

CL-

The pix in the ebay listing are nicer, I had to shrink them to fit ccf.

Medals can quite often be much more handsome than coins, because high relief not only brings out the details of the design more, but high relief features do not have to be considered from a wear standpoint.
