Hello all,

New user here with limited knowledge regarding odd marks on a new coin from the RCM.

They look like burn marks, maybe from something landing in the press before it was struck?

The slab has been untouched and is still as sealed as it ever was.

I've included below links to imgur so that I can use hi-res images.

Thanks for your insight!

I think I know this mark. it's from acid tests. since the coin is 50% silver, both test failed, if passed, the mark would be green. BTW, it's not in a slab, a capsult can be easily opened.

I see...does this devalue the coin in any way?

Can/should this mark be removed?

Thanks

I'm not familiar with acid tests referenced above, so I can't comment one way or the other. What I can say is that most collectors would consider the coin damaged.

Pristine examples of this coin can be purchased for under $30, so the coin you've presented would almost certainly be worth less. It has 0.375 ounces of silver, however, so its melt value (at today's ~$31.60 per ounce) is $11.85.

You might be able to remove the coloring by "dipping" it, which means to give it a quick rinse (two or so seconds) in a solution such as Jeweluster. This method will only (possibly) remove the color, it will not repair any previous damage to the coin's surface. It could also potentially do more damage to the coin.

So perhaps I should contact the RCM about replacing the coin?

dchevalier: you bought this coin from RCM?

from photo this coin seems to be a BU version 1981 silver dollar, which is supposed to be in a square capsule, right?

Yes, this coin was purchased from the RCM as part of their "Canadian Silver Dollar Collection" series.

It is in the container that it was provided with from the RCM.

I seem to remember the RCM offering this "Canadian Silver Dollar Collection" recently but I can't remember the details. I assume you bought this directly from the mint recently? If so, how is it they are selling these coins? Are they surplus from 1981 or are they minting more and dating them 1981?

Looks more like electrical contact high point on small dot, bigger mark has what looks like toning, possible silver enrichment? from electric current
I agree with SilverBug At 50% silver, acid test would fail.

Absolutely contact the Mint. This coin IMO is damaged.

I wondered about this collection as well. They can't be minting new coins and back dating them (could they?) so where did the inventory come from? Surely, the mint doesn't hold stock for 30 plus years.....

As I recall, the collection was sold at close to current silver dollar prices which in the case of the '81 is a terrible deal. I'm going by memory so could be wrong about that.

is it possible some folks in RCM are trying to dump their own silver dollar collection?

obveriously RCM doesn't need to acid test its inventory, the mark could be rust. some tiny iron dust droped from die and stuck to the coin...
