Hello. I jumped into coin collecting last year when I bought two gold buffalo $50 2006 proofs from the mint. These were limited to 300,000, but I see the mint is still selling them. Does anyone know if there are many to be had yet? Obviously I am thinking the sooner they sell out the better. Thanks in advance...

The mint has stopped making the 2006 Buffalos and is just selling off the coins on hand. The total mintage is not known yet but it should be right around 250,000.

I think I read in CoinWorld here awhile back that the Mint has actually sold all 300,000 of the 2006's, but they may have a few left because of customer returns and such. Actually, I was surprised that they didn't sell out faster than they did.

I was also surprised. The coin is so beautiful I figured it would sell out quickly. I'm happy that my wife and I bought one for our collection.

I too thought they would sell out quickly. Basically, I had to work a ton of over-time at work for almost 2 years, as a bit of an apology to my daughter, I bought her one in hopes of when she's older it will be worth something. It has made me kind of nervous that there are still some for sale.

Another thing that has disappointed me about the Gold Buffalo is the price they are going for on the open market so far. It's hard to get $800 for one even now after they've more or less sold out at the Mint.....hope that changes in the future.

To our way of thinking, "about $800" would be good. We paid $505 for ours.

Are you saying you bought a 2006 Gold Buffalo PROOF for $505.00? Do you mind sharing your source?

Not at all. My coin store is owned by a man and his daughter. The daughter showed my wife and I the proof Buffalo, and we fell in love with it. The lady said she owned two personally, and needed to free up some money, so asked if we would like to buy one. On our way home we decided we would go in debt and buy the coin, so we called the store and asked them to save the coin for us.

At that time you could buy the Gold Proof Buffalo from the Mint for $500 plus shipping.

We went back to the store about three days later to pick up the coin and pay for it. The coin store lady charged $500 plus $5 for what she had to pay for shipping and handling. So, total cost was $505.

Wish we would have had the money to buy several at that time. Would have been a great profit. But, that's why the rich get richer I guess.

I'm fairly certain you're mistaken about this. The proof Buff has been $800 at the Mint since it became available. You got a great deal.

texasmick, You certainly could be right.

I'm a steady customer, and while I don't have a lot to spend, the coin store owners appreciate my business, and often give me a real good deal on coins. So, it's possible that they gave me a good deal on purpose.

For the proof $800 has been the price right from the start. The Unc has been just above the Gold price, so $6-700.

Hi, I've looked at my Grandpa's (Gary Burke) gold buffalo, and it is very pretty.

I love gold coins and hope when I'm an adult I will be able to buy some.

Guess you're right!

air-tites, I don't know that I've ever had a great deal on a coin before, so glad I finally did.

As I stated, I'm sure it was done on purpose, as a sort of reward. The coin store owners are knowledgable with regard to coin prices, so just their way of saying thanks. I knew I got a good deal, but didn't realize it was that good!!

I thought the coin you showed that you bought was the UNC version not the Proof version
