At a coin show last Sunday I purchased my usual Hard Covered edition of the 2013 Red Book for my Red Book collection. Complete from 1st edtion to present. Also, a few copies of the Ringed Version for home usage.
If you plan on getting the 2013 version, you'll be dissipointed. I have been comparing each one with a 2010 version for the last few years and not to much is changing. In many areas the prices have been dropping. I suspect Whitman is getting tired of people complaining that all the prices in their Red Book are a joke so they've been slowly trying to adjust that. Must be a lot more info in there since it went from 430 pages in the 2012 edition to 447 in the 2013 version.

If the "listed" prices are coming down, I guess that is good. Many people who inherit coins find the Red Book in the library and then expect that price when selling coins.

Not to hijack this thread but I actually have a RedBook question. The 09 mint set says value $38. They sell around $22-25 on ebay and I just bought one today for 19.99 So I guess...what number is right? Is that set currently going up or down? I thought the Red Book would be a better reference than ebay but I feel confused now...

If you think of the time it takes to compile, format, publish, print and distribute the Red Book. Prices are out of date before they hit the shelves.

Red Book is a great reference for Highly recognized varieties, Mintages, and grade survival. It is not great for pricing.

The Red Book is a great reference...just not for prices. Although; they may be more accurate at the Gem level than at the G4 level.

Especially with all the silver coming out of the woodwork these past few years. I buy most silver based on spot plus a premium rather than even Grey sheet values.

For instance I have bought every BU Franklin to complete my set from Bullion dealers...at bullion prices. Well, except for a 63 of all things. But it had full bells and for $14 was worth it. 55 bugs bunny at spot; check. 48 S and D at spot, check, ect, ect.

And with so much attention on silver coins copper is getting to be a good buy as well. I have bought some beautiful high grade IHC for less than $15 each.

The Red Book has lagged behind for a long while now, but I really believe that with the Volitile PM market that it is even more confused.

ebay is one of the best ways to price an item. it tells you the actual price people are willing to pay

I actually purchased a few coins at the local coin show a couple weeks ago,and the dealer had a tablet and compared prices to ebay in front of you to come to an agreement on price. Pretty amazing actually.

Nice, I've been getting a lot of nice XF full diamond IHC for around $1 each.
