I try to buy some 2012 old design toonie and loonie rolls from Colonial and Gatewest, but:

Gatewest sold out both toonie and loonie.

Colonial sold out toonie and only 2 rolls loonie available.

Any one knows where the old design 2012 toonie and loonie available? Is the Mint Winnipeg still have some available?

They're still available on ebay but individual coins. I just bought the old style 2012 Loonie and Toonie to make sure I get them. When will they announce the mintage amount of the old style 2012 coins?

Its pretty clear that there is something very interesting going on regarding the 2012 Type 1 loonie and toonie. Where are they?!! The mint in Winnipeg had a few boxes starting the last week of February and got additional boxes from the plant as needed until the announcement and release of the Type 2 circulation coins. They then ran out and have only had the new design since that time. I have visited the mint several times since then and have asked for the old ones but the only answer you get is "maybe there will be some available later". The fact is that there are likely tons of the old type in the plant but its very possible that no more will be released. And why would they release a coin that they have already announced as being subject to recall and melting? Its pretty obvious that the most efficeint way to recsll the 2012 is to never release it and melt them before they get into circulation and then have to be recalled.

I doubt that the big dealers are "sold out". However its my bet that they have been told they can't have any more and are waiting to see what the price on these rolls the market will set. Maybe shades of the 1991 25c are in the offing.

I know that the few 2012 first issue 2012 loonies and toonies that I have will stay safely set aside until I hear something diffinitive on the numbers released. They will not be rare coins due to all of these coins in the various gift sets and the P/L sets. But if there are ony a few 100,000 out there $10.00 to $25.00 a coin isn't out of the question. What does the forum think of these comments?

At best any estimate of mintage numbers can only be speculation. However we do know that there are 75,000 P/L sets with the Type 1 coins. Then there are the other sets:Baby, wedding, etc, etc. Maybe 20,000 per type of set. So another 100,000. Then there is the big question. How many circulation coins were actually released? The mintage is not important; the number released is. I have yet to see a 2012 in circulation but who knows how many may have been released in other parts of the country. 2012 coins were released at the mint boutiques for sure. Only a few boxes likely at each. Another 25,000? Then there are the boxes in the hands of the big dealers. Another 100,000? So at least 300,000 if none went into general circulation. So not a rare coin but shades of the 1991 25c as I said yesterday. Only time will tell. But thats my estimate.

Also the big spill of a few weeks ago is of interest. Were these the new type or the type one. If they were Type 0ne coins were they being shipped for distribution or destruction? This is definately going to be an interesting year!!

Do you think that the older ones have a higher mintage than the newer ones? Maybe the newer ones are just for testing.

I do not think so because it is very easy to get the new design toonie and loonie rolls from banks. Yesterday, I went to RBC and asked them how many rolls of new design toonie and loonie available for exchange. They answered, " as many rolls as you want." Therefore, I got 5 rolls of toonie and loonie from the bank. However, when I asked any available old design toonie and loonie for exchange, the answer is "no." I believe the new design will be as many as the 1996 toonie mintage.

To make money!

Please, follow my thought.

I know that the exact figures hab been mentioned here on CCF a couple of months ago. Unfortunately, I cannot find them (even if my life depended on it. Sorry). So, for arguments sake lets just say that it the production of an ''old'' Loonie costs the RCM 15 Cents, and that of an ''old'' Toonie 25 Cent.
So, they make a profit of 85 Cents, resp. 1,75 Dollar, for each old coin that the release into circulation.
Lets further assume that collecting and melting costs the RCM 10 Cent per old Loonie/Toonie.
Therefore, they still have made a profit of 75 Cent/1,65 Dollar per (business strike) coin.
If they just made 500.000 business strikes of the old ones it is a profit of 1.200.000 Dollar. Can the RCM afford to NOT make such a profit?
If they melt down the already exisiting coins they would make at least a loss of 15/25 Cent per coin. If there are 500.000 coins that would be 200.000 Dollars.

I was at the Regina Coin Show this weekend. Only one person had any of the Type 1 loonies. These were being sold for $5.00 each and they quickly sold out. No one had any toonies.
