While looking through a large plastic bag full of various
foreign coins, I came across several that are corroding.

I've found and read several threads about coin cleaning and preservation but I'm still concerned about messing with these coins. If I do nothing, however, I'm afraid the coins will be ruined from corrosion.

Here are some pics representative of the various levels of corrosion. Which of these procedures if any would be recommended.

1. Let soak in acetone.
2. Buy and use verdi-care.
3. Store in jar of mineral or olive oil for several months.

On the larger coin it looks like powdery-green bronze disease to me. Bronze disease spreads if kept in a damp or humid environment and can jump from coin to coin, so pull anything turning green like this out of the bag. I should point out that this is also a good argument for keeping your coins separately housed, in 2x2s or albums.

Acetone won't do a thing about bronze disease or corrosion. So you'll need to try either #2 or #3.

First question is are they worth treating? If they are a bunch of cheap low value pieces you could easily spend more trying to stop the corrosion than they are worth.

As Sap said actone won't get rid of bronze disease, but it will throughly dry it out and then if it is kept very dry it should keep it from getting worse. (Bronze disease still takes moisture to continue growing.)

As you mentioned you were looking through a large bag of coins. This to me would indicate not a lot of money spent originally. Very possibly most of those are rather on the lower value side so any expendatures on cleaning material would end up costing more than the coins are worth.
For now simpley try Disstilled water. If nothing happens, just file them away where no more moisture will get to them.

Even though the coins probably aren't of much value, they are part of my father's neglected coin collection. They have some sentimental value. I went ahead and ordered a small bottle of that verdicare stuff. I'll also try the distilled water first and see what happens. You guys have been very helpful.
