I can make out 1883, in Latin
A L S SV ?
and USA on the reverse.
Can you take to it with a loupe or a glass, and decipher the other writing ?

Badges don't usually have features on both sides.
A fob or medal would have a suspender somewhere, but I can't see one on this.

I was able to find some information on this medal. It is a Sons of Veterans of the Civil War Auxiliary medal. It evidently hung by a ribbon which is missing. None of the example that I found had the A,S,L,AV letters on them, not sure what those stand for. Thanks

the later photo is a little clearer: I can make out two cannon, crossed diagonally, behind the other design elements.
Which suggests a military connection.
