Once upon a time, when I was about 9 years old and really interested in coin collecting, I bought a 1971 S Ike dollar. I thought that it was just a regular business strike, so I didn't really take care of it for many years. It wasn't until recently (read yesterday), that I decided to look it up on google. I was dismayed to find that the S Ike dollars were only minted as parts of proof or uncirculated sets.

Reminds me of a time when I was 13 or so (about 7 years ago). I was trying to find out how much money I could pull together by cleaning up all the loose change laying about my (very messy) room. I think it totaled up to about $10 when I piled it all together.

In that pile of change I remember seeing a Washington quarter from the 1930s. I want to say the date was 1937, but I can't quite remember. As I wasn't into collecting then, I didn't think much of it and I'm pretty sure I ended up spending it on something.

I think there was a post once about all the dumb things we all did with coins in the past. Yours is minor compared to what many others have done. Mine was when I was a kid my Dad gave me Silver Dollars for an allowance. That was every week some Silver Dollars. I spent every single one as if they were just what they were back then, money. Thinking back I'd bet I spent many, many hundreds of dollars in Silver Dollars.

Ouch!

Well, on the bright side there are bigger mistakes that you could have made. For example, you could spent it as a dollar.

The important thing is that you know now. Also, in my opinion, there is no such thing as a bad Eisenhower dollar.

I have a roll and a half of 90% halves in a plastic baggie with two very old paper roll wrappers, that presumably I got from one of my grandparents. I don't remember ever receiving them, they were just always there in one of my junk boxes that I have been moving around since college.

I must have needed money at some point, probably for beer or cigarettes or pizza, and spent half a roll at face. I'm glad I at least have some left.

Sorry to hear that, but at least, now you know. Are you going to collect more Ike dollars or other coins?

Is the Ike you have, worn or beat up? Any pictures of it?
