Yesterday I bought what I believe is a 1971D dollar from a junk shop for £1. It matches the pictures and description in this website facts ( thanks for the info ). It also appears to be made out of a sandwich of metal, as described by this website.

When looking at the reeded edge, there is a copper-coloured band around it. Is this just the sandwich visible?

There is a small "D" below the bust on the reverse. What does this mintmark represent?

Are there any fakes out there and if so, how can you tell one?

If my coin is genuine, how does what I paid compare to its current value?

There certainly are fakes out there for every coin. Someone else will have to answer all the ways to check though.

I do believe the band is normal on the coin and you paid a fair value for it.

The D represents the Denver Mint in Colorado

The "bust" side is the obverse side and the D mint mark represents the Denver mint. The copper band is normal for a "clad" coin which is made from a copper nickel "sandwich". You paid a fair price. An average circulated one goes for around $1.20 U.S. I see no reason that it would be a fake because the date is a common one but there is always a chance.

You may want to check to see if this is a "friendly eagle" variety, which is worth considerably more than an ordinary 1971-D Eisenhower dollar.

The Chinese DID make a fake 1971 Ike dollar. I don't know if it was a D or not, but it was not made of a "sandwich" composition and they were magnetic.
