I picked up some nickel dollars and halves at the bank yesterday. As I was going through them I noticed some roughness on the planchet below the date on a 1968 Half. I put it aside and looked at the rest and low an behold I found the exact same thing on a 1969 half. None of the other 10 halves showed the same damage and there were two more from 69 up till 96. The attached photos don't really show it but I noticed that the roughness extends down into the coat of arms as well but only in the low areas, the high areas are untouched. A rough planchet, but quite a Coincidence don't you think.

Hi Commoncents13.
I disagree, I have no idea what a crease on the die would do, but this is more a planchet problem than a die problem. Under magnification it looks like rippling in or on the planchet. I have looked at many nickel half dollars from the 60's to more recent dates and have never seen anything like this. We can agree to disagree.

i could see if the planchet was defective, affecting several "batches", but (1) is the anamoly happening but on other planchets only in different locations? if not then for both, but different years, to have the same thing show up in EXACTLY the same place on the die makes me think something else is going on other than coincidence.

--chwkboy--We agree on that, but I have seen lots of these 68 and 69 especially!
---Whatever the cause, I have given them out as intriguing service tips. Quite common.
---You asked!
---I went to the bank 34 years ago and found them and still do, I would bet if you went to the bank tomorrow you would find another if they had more halves!
Good luck then, maybe you'll find a good one!
