I am curious if this is a good buy, or if its over priced. I want to do a coin set from 1889 (since I was born in 1989), including gold. I'm not sure about the actual gold content. Thanks a lot for the help .

Hi Jizer1,

Ok, the thing here for me is that it is ebay. Now the are a lot of authentic coins selling on ebay, Problem is there are a lot of fakes too.

As a general rule for myself, if the coin is worth more than $100 then I don't get it from ebay. ($100 is what I'm willing to risk).

I'd suggest that you try Brick and Mortar dealers. You will probably find the same coin for a decent price and have less chance of getting ripped off.

Cheers

There's a fraction under a quarter of an ounce (0.2354 of an oz) of gold in that coin so the bullion value right now is US$386. The price asked is right on the money for an AU graded coin which that coin may well be. Personally I'd look for a graded example because they can be had at a very small premium to purchasing raw and you've got more assurance as to the grade.

This coin looks authentic to me - sovereign copies are really atrocious especially the Type 1. This Jubilee Head is the L2 type (Legend 2 - D:G: close to crown & tip of crown barely touches denticles as opposed to L1 where it overlaps).

Because of the fine scratches in the fields & small dings, I'd grade it as aUNC & as such 2010 Macca's prices it as $425 & UNC as $600. While the price of gold has risen in the last couple of years, these prices are still significantly higher than bullion of about $390 & I don't think the numismatic prices have risen in step with the gold price. As sovereigns go, this type is not uncommon so I'd agree that you'd be better off going to a Bricks and Mortar dealer.

You can get a low-end MS for about $550, so its a little overpriced (it looks like an AU53).

its better to get a coin like that from a dealer that way if it is fake you have a much better chance of getting your money back also I wouldnt trust ebay all the time but maybe that is just because I got bburnt quite a few times:( good luck with the collection tho:)
