Ok, so I'm still new to coin collecting.
I live near Brisbane and would like to know where is the best place to buy coins or is it just ebay and the Perth Mint these days?

I suppose that depends on your interests. There are dealers and coin shows in Brisbane, as well as other auctions and fairs, but ebay is pretty good in general if you know what you're looking for and know how to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Forums such as this, numismatic clubs or picking up a copy of Australasian Coin & Banknote magazine every now and again would keep you up to date with what's going on around the place and in coins in general.

Dealers are by far the best way to get coins IMO. You get to see it in hand, no tricky lighting/photography and you can make you own mind up on the grade. Might be slightly more expensive than ebay but if much more fun.

What are you interested in collecting? Predecimal, decimal or NCLT?

There are three "brick and mortar" coin dealers in Brisbane: Northside (Global Coins & Banknotes, Clayfield), Southside (vpcoins, Mt Gravatt) and City Centre (Colonial Coins & Medals). I visit all of them fairly regularly and buy from all of them. I also go to all the coin shows held in town.

Which dealers are "best" depends in part on what you're hoping to buy. Modern mint products? Predecimals? World, Ancient & Mediaeval? Mint errors? Or all of the above? I've found Colonial to have the most variety of stock for world, ancient & mediaeval, which is what I'm primarily looking for.

I also attend both of the coin clubs in town (I'm the Secretary of one of them, the QNS). Neither are significant sources of coin purchases themselves (both have fairly small "auctions" every few months) but they are both very good for gaining general numismatic knowledge and for chatting face-to-face with fellow collectors.

I prefer the second two shops that Sap mentioned.
There's also coin shows on regularly: some get advertised in the Weekend Shopper (if you buy the Courier Mail).

There's an ANDA coin show coming up in Brisbane...it would be a good idea for you to attend to get a feel of what's around and what to look for in a coin. First up nothing beats hands on and as you get better acquanted in your coin collecting pursuits then dive into ebay

Excellent guys, thanks for all the info.
At this stage I'm mostly interested in modern mint as well as a slight interest in predecimals.
Sap, thanks for the local dealers info, I'll be sure to check them out

Hi Silvers,

Another dealer that is very good I find is Gold Coast Coins and Stamps down in Southport. I bit of a drive but worth it.

I have not been to the guy in Clayfield, will have to fix that, but the other two mentioned are great as well.

Cheers
Pete
