Hello everyone,

So I was coin roll hunting and my box was full of 1940s and 1950s coins so I sorted through and found 15 1949 pennies and decided to check them for an A to Denticle. I am new to this and not sure but I think I may have found one. I am looking at the second A in GRATIA and not the first A correct?

Here is a picture:

Is-This-A-1949-A-To-Denticle?

What do you think? Am I looking at the right A? (the second one)

If it is infact an A to Denticles what grade would you give it?

Yes--the second A in GRATIA is aligned to a denticle.

That is good news, thank you! Time to go through these 1950s and hunt for a 54 or 55 NSF :P
Rest in Peace

I don't think so! If you look closely, I say no!
--- I see a between denticles, the "A" is slightly a skew to the left of the denticle.

What is "A to Denticle" and why is it special?

mberteig: The denticles are the 'bumps' around the rim of the coin. A to Denticle refers to the fact that the 2nd A in the word Gratia on the obverse points directly to a denticle instead of slightly off to the side. These are commonly recognized as the two major variants of the 1949 1 cent (and others). Frequently 1 variant is significantly rarer and hence more valuable as in this case. See the following link for pictures and prices.

Nevalite: My eyes aren't good enough to tell for sure from the pictures. :-) I'd lean towards an A to Denticle variety though. As commoncents13 says, it does look a little off to the left but I'm not sure if it's far enough to make it off Denticle. My 2 cents worth :-)
