So, the ASE San Fran Proof Set is being issued to mark the 75th anniversary of the opening of the current SF Mint Building. The set is going to contain two silver eagles not otherwise available.

Are we considering them commemoratives? Thoughts?

Interesting. I say no because it's the same design as the standard eagles... But, considering the way they are being packaged and only available in this "commemorative" set, I can see it.

Interesting commems. I just may add this one to my modest commemorative collection. Or at least try, if it's like the 25th Ann. set

Hmmm, I actually never bothered to think if it should be considered a commem or not. I can see the argument from both sides. On one hand it is a standard design that has been repeated before, but on the other it is celebrating the SF Mint.

I lean towards saying no just because I never really considered the 20th or 25th anniversary set a commem and I view this set as more of an extension of those than a true commem. Depending on the packaging though the packaging itself could be considered a commem like some of the fine pieces youve shown with your collection.

However it gets designated I am very excited and would love to see some sort of annual ASE set with coins only available through the set

I would say no to a commem, because those are approved by Congress and this is strictly a Mint product.

And the Mint calls it an ASE. The release date is now 6-7-12.
