How are they marked? If with a Sharpie or similar marker, then they are easily helped with acetone. I agree, it is annoying. Just because I know how to clean up a mess does not mean I should have to clean up a mess.

I can relate. I usually find halves w/ red or black sharpie on the edge. I also found a lot w/ a last name on the obv. in black sharpie. Why would anyone take the time to do this is beyond me. I'm with you!
Any person who claims to be a coin collector, yet defaces coins by marking them, is a disgrace to coin collectors and roll hunters.

yes it is truly annoying, the ones that really bother me are the rimmed marks opening up the roll and seeing little dots/lines on the rim really ticks me off

what about the people who scratch a cross over "useless" quarters/coins? that's irreversible damage

Um Have to come clean here I mark 74D Half dollars with a sharpie. Yes I know its considered bad but there is nothing worse than searching the same coins ten or 15 times a year usually about 30% of any box I get I have had before there is little turn around on Half dollars where I live.. Stone me if you like but lets face it if you are roll searching you are not going to be interested I a VF common date coin you are either looking for a high grade, variety or Silver.

I know for fact that there are roll hunters that mark upwards of $10,000 in halves at a crack. They have a strategy that works for them. Personally, I have never marked a coin.

I don't see what strategy there is to marking coins?
Even if you get back coins in a box that were marked by you, I've opened up rolls that had the end coins marked and found Silver halfs inside, so what does marking coins prove?
IMHO, not a darn thing except deface the coin!

I've never marked a coin, nor would I ever. I don't think it's a complete sin because acetone could take it off... but how annoying and ugly is it to open a box and see a ton of marked coins. It just doesn't make you feel good. And I'm with chuckster on this one. Marking coins in my opinion gets you nowhere. Except maybe it might be cool to see if you get the same coins back again.

I believe that the strategy is, that if you don't see your coins back for awhile, your dump plan is working. If you see them back soon after you dump, your plan is not working. Simply put. If you are searching high volume, the less you see of your marked coin, the better.

The difference is, the less you have to search the same coins over and over, the better the chances for increased silver finds. Especially if you are a monster hunter.
