Check out this 1835 capped bust half dollar it's NGC graded at XF-45. The large Cud at 2:30 on the reverse has me baffled :-)

Take Care

There are no examples with a Die Cud for this year listed in the 4th Overton attribution book.

Ok, rookie on the set. What is a Cud. I saw the big blob on the reverse but is there any special meaning to Cud. Or, is it just another be chunk of crrrrrrrrude. Jim

A die-cud is left on a coin when a piece of the die breaks off. Imagine a Washington quarter if a portion of the die broke and flaked off. There would be a big blob of metal left alongside of his head Here is an example of a reverse (UNITED) die-cud on a very HTF dime. Please disregard the knife stab marks. This dime was found at an excavation at the Alamo close to where Davy Crockett fell.

I've also received information today which points to it being simply a rim bump as there are no known examples of Die Cuds in the series and, but another collecter said NGC wouldn't slab a damaged (rim bumped) coin and looking at it closely I don't know...

Jim1953: markn posted another big honking " Cud" on the Interesting Coins from Circulation thread today. This one is on the rim and is a little easier to see and perhaps understand.
