What is your’s?, What is your most beautiful coin? The first coins you really got for your collection?, the first coin you buyed on an auction?, of the first one you found in a shopping mall or on a beach?
I can tell you mine, I got my most beautiful coin abouth 12 years back, in a little bag whitch I buyed on an auction here in Holland, together with abouth ½ a kilo of other world coins, I don’t remember the auction place annymore, but untill the day of today, I remember, and have that little coin.
It’s a 25 cent piece from the Netherlands, 1901, (KM 120.1), in what we call Pr which stands for Prachtig (Beautiful). Now if you look in the Krause Standard Catalog of world coins, you see that it’s a coin who is worth abouth twohundred dollars, but in our Mevius catalog it’s 575,-- euro!
But, even I would have to sell all my coins some day, this one is not for sale, why should i?, the way I got it, I payed that time abouth 15 guldens for the lot, and the inpact that this finding did to me, it made me a even more fanatic collector, is the stimulation that every collector needs from time to time!
I considder this coin as my “lucky penny” a coin to hold on to, and stimulate me to find more of those!!
So?, what’s yours?
Greetings, Carl

Neat Topic. The most beautiful coin, IMHO, was the very first MS Liberty nickel I ever bought. It was an 1883 N/C. I paid $12.50 for it. Just recently I had it slabbed by ANACS and it came back as a MS-63. I have other MS Liberty nickels along with proofs as well. This one however holds a special place in my collection. catman

Along with a number of coins that my Grandfather gave me to get me started collecting, he gave me a very old Chinese 100 yen note. It was very creased and circulated and eventually tore in two. Out of everything he gave me, though, this note made me think about the age and history of money. While my interests always stayed in coins rather than currency, it was this note that sparked that interest in "old" money and its history. I still have it today (taped together) in the original binder that I put it in when he gave it to me all those years ago. I can't say that I could call this note beautiful, but it's very special to me because it got me started on the numismatic path.

Some of you may guess that I'd say my most beautiful coin is a Morgan, and I won't disappoint. My 1891-CC is my favorite, it's not the best preserved in my collection, it probably would grade XF if I'm lucky, but it's toned to a really neat rosy-silvery-coppery color.

It certainly is not the most beautiful coin, but my 1794 Large Cent has my heart. Although it is a replacement coin,it replaced the first Large Cent I owned as a youngster. I sold the original in my early twenties(house, baby, etc...) and and in my late 30's,early 40's I began replacing my old coppers as best I could. The replacement coin is a beautiful EF40. The original was probably a G4-VG8 at best and quite corroded! I have been working on the oldies pretty much ever since! I love these threads. They always bring out great stories! Mike

Most Beautifrl coin in my collection would have to be any one of the matched set of Oregon Trail Commemorative Half-dollars. I appreciate the history behind the issuing of the coin and the people who did the design and artistry. Something not seen before, or since in U.S. coinage IMO.
I agree with you Steve, Mike sure has a lot of dogs with grins on their faces, don't he?

Well my favorite World Coin would be my 1897 Netherlands "Young Head" 10 Gulden Gold piece. Absolutely love the design and there is nothing like it in the world! My favorite U.S. coin would have to be my Carson City Morgan dollars and all the other Morgan dollars. As for most beautiful, at this time? Well it would probably be the 2003 Belarus silver "Swans" commemorative.

Stujoe, I have been trying very unsuccessfully for the last 6 months to purchase a Gothic Florin on ebay! Seems the whole world wants one worse than I do or they all have more money to burn than I do! Will agree the Gothic Florins are very attractive coins. Sooner or later I will have one!

Susan, that is a work of art! I think Stujoe already posted this coin in another thread. (someone posted a Unc or nearly so, just equisite). What does one of these puppies go for in AU to UNC? Mike

That is a very nice one Susan. I thought long and hard about adding that one to mine. I know I did post mine in another thread but I can't find the picture right now! The first time I saw one, I knew I had to have one even though it fits in none of my collections.

That is just plain beautiful. Hey Stujoe, as far as fitting into a collection catagory, let me suggest the title of World's best designs.

The one in my post is VF and sold for $60. I'll see what I can find for an AU/UNC one. (I'll also look for Stujoe's pic to post here).
