new to this detecting business I can see how buying 9 volts at the gas station for $6 a pop x3 at a time will get expensive real fast.

how long do batteries typically last in your detector? I understand all detectors are different but I want to know if they last a whole day, several outtings, change only a few times a season....

also if I use rechargeables is it true that they will die faster than normal batteries?
will the m.d. have reduced range or performance due to using rechargeables? I hear they have a lower voltage ouput and I wasnt sure if this affects things much.

Yea. Been using them for 10 years and they last a long time. Some are 8 years old and still hold their charge.

try buying 9 volts at Radio Shack, not at the gas station for $6 a pop x3 !
Sometimes they have a good special price on normal 9 volts at Radio Shack.
only thing you should buy at the gas station is gas, they over-price everything else and that's how they make their big $$$

If they could do it, they would charge $1.25 for a $1 lottery ticket, but the State will not let them

I've found the best bang for the buck at Big Lots. They sell Japanese "Fuji" brand batteries for about $2. Apparently, Japanese battery chemistry is more advanced, so they last longer than the US brands.

My White's and my Minelab both come with rechargeable packs - that's the way to go.

I have never had much luck with the PP3 9v rechargeables they never last long and run down quickly. Regular 1.5volt AA or AAA yes they are worth while but not the small 9volt ones.

If you have a dollar store nearby pick up the 2 pack
of 9 volt. Hey, two for a buck you can't go wrong.
I was surprised also how long they last considering
they are not top brand names. Just check the exp. date
on them and get at least 2 yrs. into the future.
Never had much luck with the rechargables in any device.

The key here is quality. My Minelab NiMH 9.6V pack is 10 years old, and will last a good 8-10 hours in the field before recharge. I bought a second for those long hunts. Set me back about $80, but pays for itself in no time. I'm one of those that think nothing of putting 500+ hours into hunting time every year. Most mid-priced detectors will be available with rechargable packs.
